Practitioners will share examples of their work on a project, a technique used, a resource created, or other strategies that relate to news literacy. Each talk will be 10 minutes or less.

The ACRL Delaware Valley Chapter is now accepting proposals for its Fall 2017 program: Fact, False, or Just Flawed: Critically Examining News in the Age of Truthiness. The event will be held on Friday, November 17, 2017 from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Have you developed a new campus partnership, program, or resource that addresses news literacy? Excited about a simple but powerful technique that you want to share with interested colleagues? Submit a lightning round proposal to teach folks to spot false, misleading, and all other shades of duplicitous public discourse. Some topics may include…
  • Statistics in reporting
  • Scientific studies in the news
  • Bias in the news
  • Evaluating non-textual information (e.g. photos, video, info-graphics)
  • Government sources 
  • Filter bubbles

There is no slide limit, but the round cannot exceed 10 minutes, so practice, practice, practice!

Topics could be inclusivity, tolerance, civic engagement, civic education, human rights, social responsibility; in the areas of collection development, programming, professional development, partnerships and outreach—just to name a few.

One author or two or three authors per chapter. Compensation: one complimentary copy per 3,000-4,000 word chapter accepted no matter how many co-authors or if one or two chapters: author discount on more copies. Contributors are expected to sign a release form in order to be published. Public, school and special librarians, LIS instructors are especially encouraged to submit.

Reference Services Review Call for Papers for Theme Issue on Library Services for People with Disabilities

Reference Services Review is seeking authors to write on the theme of library support for people with disabilities in any type of setting, in any country.  Examples of topics include (but are not restricted to):

-- Collaborations to promote services for people with disabilities in the community, schools, campuses, assisted living centers, or other settings
-- Library collections and formats to support services for people with disabilities
-- Library outreach to people with disabilities

The Geek and Popular Culture: A Love/Hate Relationship
It’s every child’s schoolyard nightmare—to be called a “nerd.” From an early age, we know that being labeled a “nerd” or a “geek” isn’t a good thing. It implies too much knowledge and too few social skills. Yet, as much as we don’t want to be labeled a “geek,” we value their knowledge and expertise, as Best Buy’s labeling their technical support “The Geek Squad” exemplifies. Furthermore, the popularity of the reigning “nerd” powerhouse The Big Bang Theory (now available nightly via syndication) or any number of other series—NBC’s Chuck and the ubiquitous “Nerd Herd,” BBC’s Doctor Who, Fox’s 24and Touch, or the Sci-Fi Channel’s Eureka—proves that America may want to watch “geeks” and use them but we “wouldn’t wanna be them.”


This area seeks to examine the relationship between popular culture and the ever-changing geek or nerd – particularly looking at the way the nerd has changed over time and what these changes can mean for the future of “nerds” of every type. Topics could include: defining the “geek,” the geek versus the nerd, female geeks or nerds, depictions of geeks, depictions of nerds, tropes surrounding nerds/geeks, Hollywood’s pseudo-nerd creations, the “babe” in nerd/geek television series or films, differences between the two terms and their depictions in television or film, the power of the nerd, the social acceptance of the term “geek,” and much more.

CFP: Linked Data Tools - LITA/ALCTS MARC Format Transition Interest Group (ALA Midwinter)

Call for speakers:

The LITA/ALCTS MARC Format Transition Interest Group is looking for speakers to participate in a managed discussion on Linked Data Tools and Local Practices at ALA Midwinter in Denver on Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. We are especially interested in local projects to convert a specific body of bibliographic data to linked data.

Speakers should plan to speak for about 10 minutes. Audience questions and discussion will be encouraged after the presentations. Some suggested areas to cover are:

  • What tools is your institution using to convert existing metadata into linked data?
  • What standards, e.g. BIBFRAME, MARC, serialization formats, RDF, etc.?
  • What is it about the material that makes converting to linked data desirable?
  • What relationship does your project have to larger, national and international linked data efforts?
  • What relationship does your project have to existing catalogs and finding aids at your institution?

The ALCTS Interest Group, Role of the Professional Librarian in Technical Services (RPLTS-IG) is seeking proposals for presentations at ALA Midwinter 2018 in Denver, CO. RPLTS-IG will meet on Saturday, Feb. 10th, from 10:30am -- 11:30am.

This year’s Midwinter tagline is “The conversation starts here”, and to capitalize on that concept, we are particularly interested in proposals that invite librarians in technical services to think about the changes happening in library technical services and to prepare themselves for the changes. Presenters will be allotted approximately 20 minutes, with a short time for questions after the presentations.

CFP: Copy Cataloging Interest Group ALA Midwinter - Denver CO Feb 2018

The ALCTS CaMMS Copy Cataloging Interest Group invites presentation proposals for its ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver on Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 8:30 to 10:00 am.

CCIG's charge is to discuss common problems concerning copy cataloging of all kinds of materials (monographs, serials, audiovisuals, etc.), quality control, work flows, staffing needs, training, and effects of changes in cataloging rules on copy cataloging.

Presentations (not including time for questions and answers) should last no longer than 20 minutes.

If you’re doing something innovative or different in how you copy catalog, we want to hear about it!  This is a great platform for you to share your knowledge.

Possible topics might include, but are not limited to:
*       Implementation and maintenance of local controlled vocabularies, subject headings, or classification systems
*       "Breaking the rules" to satisfy a user need
*       Retooling existing workflows or practices based on public service work, assessment, or user feedback
*       Meeting the needs of unique user groups
*       Adopting new technologies or standards (e.g., BIBFRAME, RDA)
*       Collaboration with library units that do not perform cataloging
*       Impacts of cross training copy catalogers to work in non-cataloging functions, such as public service

Evidence Summaries Writers

EBLIP seeks to add five writers to the Evidence Summaries Team. Evidence Summaries provide critical appraisal syntheses for specific research articles. These research synopses provide readers with information regarding the original research article's validity and reliability, thus providing information on the presence or absence of evidence with which to make informed decisions. Evidence Summaries Team members are required to write two evidence summaries per year, with a two year commitment to the journal. Evidence Summaries cover all areas of library and information studies and we encourage applications from information professionals in areas such as school, public, and special libraries, as well as academic settings.

Interested persons should send a statement of interest, indicating areas of strength they would bring to the role, as well as a brief résumé to Heather Pretty (Associate Editor, Evidence Summaries) hjpretty@mun.ca by October 15, 2017. Applicants who are shortlisted will be asked to submit a sample evidence summary.

Call for Applicants for EBLIP Journal: Associate Editor (Research Articles)

Evidence Based Library and Information Practice (EBLIP), a peer reviewed open access journal published since 2006 seeks to fill a position of Associate Editor (Research Articles). The successful candidate will be expected to begin their role by December 2017 and serve a 3 year term (with possibility of renewal). This person will share the workload with a second Associate Editor.
The Associate Editor (Research Articles) will be responsible for:
  • Overseeing the complete editorial process for items submitted to the Research Articles section (this includes assignment of peer reviewers, monitoring the peer review process, communicating with authors and peer reviewers, making acceptance decisions, ensuring required changes to manuscripts are made, communicating with copyeditors and the production editor to ensure the final copy is as expected).
  • Communicating and consulting with the Editor-in-Chief on a regular basis.
  • Attending Editorial Team meetings, via Skype, on a monthly basis and participating in the overall governance of the journal.
  • Ensuring that all necessary deadlines are met.
  • Communicating with potential authors and responding to queries.

CFP: LIRT TLT discussion session @ ALA Midwinter! - “App-etizing Instruction: Practical Tips For Teaching Emerging Technologies”

The LIRT Teaching, Learning, and Technology Committee is sponsoring an ALA Midwinter discussion session on Saturday, February 10th from 1-2:30 pm, location TBD.

“App-etizing Instruction: Practical Tips For Teaching Emerging Technologies”

Emerging technologies pose new pedagogical challenges as libraries grapple with assessing their role and impact on learning and scholarship. Please join the LIRT TLT committee for a lively and practical exploration of the issues surrounding the integration of tools ranging from 3D printers to virtual reality software into our instructional repertoire. This session will feature a panel of librarians from various types and sizes of libraries followed by group activities and interaction, where we will examine topics such as developing lesson plans and assessment methods, collaborating with faculty and other partners, analyzing formats and modalities of delivery, and contending with varying levels of support and funding.
