Call for Editorial Board Members - Information Technology and Libraries

Information Technology and Libraries [ITAL] is LITA’s quarterly, open-access, peer-reviewed journal. If you are a LITA member who is interested in furthering the scholarly record for library technology and have a background in information technology in academic, public, or other libraries, this is the opportunity for you.

As ITAL marks its 50th anniversary, the ITAL Editorial Board has a critical role to play in building the foundation for the journal’s next 50 years. The Editorial Board should reflect the wide broad diversity of the LITA membership. Members of the Board have several key responsibilities:
  1. Reviewing articles submitted to the journal and providing guidance to the editor on suitability for the journal and contribution to the field;
  2. Shaping the direction and strategy for the journal; and
  3. Soliciting and developing articles from your peers.

Duties. In addition to reviewing 1-2 submissions a month, Board members are expected to participate in monthly online Board meetings. Attendance at ALA Annual and Midwinter is not required. A term of service is two years (July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2020); an individual may serve up to two consecutive terms.

The Library and Information Technology Association seeks proposals for the 21st Annual LITA Library Technology Forum in Minneapolis, Minnesota from November 8-10, 2018.

Our theme for the 2018 LITA Library Technology Forum is:

Building & Leading
What are you most passionate about in librarianship and information technology? This conference is your chance to share how your passions are building the future, and to lead others by illumination and inspiration. Along those lines, we are inviting you to rethink your take on presentations and programming.

To inspire your creativity, we have three options from which you may choose:

  • Traditional: Solo or panel presentations on a topic, fixed length, may be streamed/recorded.
  • Hands-on: Leading the audience through a creative or generative process, attendees should feel like they did something when they leave, variable lengths of 1-3 hours possible.
  • Discussion-based: Involving shorter presentation lengths, with extensive time for break-out discussions with audience.
We have rooms that are dedicated to each type, with seating and AV setups appropriate to each style of presentation. The goal will be to give attendees a variety of styles, timeframes, and topics to choose from at every turn.

Proposal Details
Proposals may cover projects, plans, ideas, or recent discoveries. We accept proposals on any aspect of library and information technology. The committee particularly invites submissions from first time presenters, library school students, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.

We deliberately seek and strongly encourage submissions from underrepresented groups, such as women, people of color, the LGBTQA+ community, and people with disabilities. We also strongly encourage submissions from public, school, and special libraries.

CFP: New Librarian Summit 2018 (San Jose, California - August 2018)

New Librarian Summit 2018 – Call for Proposals

To support early career Librarians, the New Librarian Summit (NLS) Organizing Committee invites proposals for its second annual conference on the specific theme, "Exploring New and Innovative Approaches in LIS.” This event aims to provide practical strategies, hands-on methods, networking, and professional development opportunities to recently graduated and/or recently appointed librarians from all types of libraries. The event will be held on August 2-3, 2018 at San Jose State University in San Jose, California.

We strongly encourage proposal submissions from MLIS graduate students, librarians who have graduated within the past 10 years, as well as those who have accepted new roles/appointments or experienced career transitions in the past 10 years. Proposals are invited across six topic areas:
  • New forms of outreach, collaboration and liaison
  • New approaches to digital scholarship, digital curation and publishing
  • The librarian-teacher: new modes of instructional design, pedagogy and assessment
  • The librarian-scholar: engagement in practice-based research and publishing
  • New challenges and solutions in technical services (e.g., collection
  • development, acquisitions, cataloging, e-resources)
  • Skills development: public speaking, writing, visual communication

Types of Submissions:

Please ensure that proposal fits into the overall theme "Exploring New and Innovative Approaches in LIS" and at least one of the topic areas outlined. Proposals are accepted for research papers, workshop ideas, student papers, graduate research, case studies, position talks, works-in-progress, reports, and proposals for future research.

CFP: Library Assessment Conference 2018 (Houston, Texas - December 2018)

According to ACRL Insider “the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the University of Washington Libraries, and the Conference Steering Committee invite paper and poster proposals for the 2018 Library Assessment Conference: Building Effective, Sustainable, Practical Assessment. This seventh biennial conference will be held in Houston, Texas, December 5–7, 2018, and is co-hosted by the University of Houston Libraries and Texas A&M Libraries.

The conference goal is to build and further a vibrant library assessment community by bringing together interested practitioners and researchers who have responsibility or interest in the broad field of library assessment. The event provides a mix of invited speakers, contributed papers, posters, and pre-conference workshops that stimulate discussion and provide workable ideas for effective, sustainable, and practical library assessment.

Proposal Topics

Paper and poster proposals that cover any aspect of library assessment in any type of library are invited. The conference steering committee especially encourages assessment-related proposals in the following areas:

Call for Proposals
The sixth Conference for Entrepreneurial Librarians ( will explore how librarians have been entrepreneurial in their own professional development and how this drives the way we serve our communities. In the last several years we’ve seen a variety of new positions emerge to meet new opportunities in academic, public and special libraries. This year’s theme “Grow, Evolve, Serve” will explore where the profession has been recently and where it needs to go in order to meet these challenges. The conference goal is twofold: to inspire entrepreneurial action among librarians and to create a community among those who do.
The conference will be held at the Wake Downtown campus of Wake Forest University on October 12, 2018.  It is sponsored by the libraries at Wake Forest University and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
We seek librarians and information professionals to present about projects related to the conference theme. Topics may include but are not limited to:
  • Evolving roles of librarians and related professions such as social work, data librarians, digital humanities, and community historians archivists.
  • Growth of outreach and marketing, collaboration, and new types of partnerships that get us out of our silos.
  • Expansion of services such as data visualization, data management, and institutional repositories.
  • Education for future professionals to respond to these changing needs
  • Privacy and the library.
  • Analytics, assessment and evaluation and using these techniques for decision making and planning.
Presentation Format:
Break-out sessions (45 minutes including Q&A) may be panels or single presenters.  Proposals should include an abstract of no more than 250 words.

Learning analytics is the “measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs.”[1] If the academic library is the “most important observation post” for understanding how students learn, then it follows that libraries in colleges and universities should be a primary focus of data mining and analysis initiatives in higher education.[2] Integration of library data in learning analytics is fledgling at best, but there are growing calls for such activity to increase, especially to enhance a library’s ability to prove their resource expenditures and demonstrate alignment with wider institutional goals (e.g., improve learning outcomes, decrease costs, etc.).[3]

The efficacy of learning analytics is premised on an institution’s ability to identify, aggregate, and manage a wide variety and increasingly large volume of data about students, much of which needs to be identifiable in order to develop personalized, just-in-time learning interventions. So, in the fashion of other Big Data initiatives, institutions are beginning to dredge their information systems for student behaviors, personal information, and communications, all of which hold potential to reveal how students learn and uncover structural impediments to learning.

It is enticing to assume good things about library participation in learning analytics. The profession wants to provide just the right information at just the right time, and professional librarians want that information to aid students as they develop personally, academically, and professionally. Moreover, the profession seeks to further cement its position as a key player in the educational experience, and learning analytics may enable librarians to make stronger claims about their pivotal role once they gain access to new sources of data and the metrics that come from data analysis. But, like all technologies, learning analytics are not neutral; they are embedded with and driven by political agendas, which may not be congruent with—or necessarily aware of—extant values and ethical positions, such as those espoused by academic librarians and users of their libraries.[4] Consequentially, scholars and practitioners need to take a critical approach to the growing role of learning analytics in academic libraries and the wider higher education context in order to better inform conversations concerning the intended and unintended positive and negative outcomes learning analytics can bring about. 

This special issue is motivated by Neil Selwyn’s position that the “purposeful pursuit of pessimism” as it relates to educational technologies is constructive and fruitful.[5] In contrast, optimism around emerging technologies—and the denial of critical voices—perpetuates a belief that technological progress is always a good thing. While we often perceive a pessimistic attitude towards technology as destructive or equate it to traditional Luddism, there is actually much to be gained by critically questioning the political agendas driving educational technology design, adoption, and diffusion.

This issue will invite authors to explore and push back against statements that learning analytics will somehow improve academic libraries by addressing questions around political positions and value conflicts inherent to learning analytics, coded in related information systems, and embedded in emerging data infrastructures.

The guest editor requests interested parties to submit an abstract of 500 words or less, following Chicago format for parenthetical and reference list citations, by April 1, 2018. Abstracts should be sent to with the subject of “Library Trends: Abstract Submission.”

Submission guidelines

Authors from all over the world are invited to submit original and unpublished papers or extended abstracts, which are not under review in any other conference or journal. All submissions will be peer reviewed by the program committee based on their originality, significance, methodological soundness, and clarity of exposition.
Submissions (extended abstracts or full papers) must be written in English and should be in PDF format. They must follow the instructions in the template file, available in Microsoft Word format at:

Full-paper length must be between 4 and 8 pages (A4 size), incorporating all text, references, figures and tables. Extended abstracts (which will not receive a DOI) should not exceed 3 pages.

These guidelines are strict: papers failing to adhere to the guidelines (by being more than 8 pages, altering margins or not following the template) will be rejected without consideration of their merits. Submissions imply the willingness of at least one author to register, attend the conference, and present the paper.
